Start with the size of the deficit
Kansas City enters the bottom of the ninth trailing San Francisco 3–2. Eric Hosmer leads off against Madison Bumgarner. One run extends the game; two end it. That makes the value of a baserunner unusually clear, but it does not make every attempt to advance that runner worthwhile. An out on the bases can remove the entire tying threat.
Separate reaching base from advancing
With no runner aboard, choose an approach for Hosmer before worrying about a sacrifice. If someone reaches, inspect who bats next and how many outs remain. A bunt with two outs cannot be a normal sacrifice because a routine out ends the game. With two strikes, a foul bunt is a strikeout. Those rules make a persistent bunt sign something to manage, not leave selected by accident.
Let the park inform the plan
Kauffman’s modeled center-field boundary is deeper than the lines. A ball that looks well struck does not automatically leave the park. The simulation resolves ball flight against its park outline, so contact can become an out, a gap hit, or a home run depending on launch and direction. These are simplified distances and ball-flight estimates, not a reproduction of a real batted ball.

What the simulation changes
The historical opening supplies the score, inning, lineup, available players, and recorded pitch counts. Your choices influence a modeled finish. Fielding and throwing errors use conservative one-base advances; passed balls, injuries, out-of-play throwing awards, and double switches are not modeled. Earlier seasons have incomplete tracking and may omit unused eligible players. Estimates are identified in the game’s scouting and data notes.
